Poop Patterns in Exclusively Breastfed Babies
Breastfed babies have unique poop patterns. Understanding normal variation helps you relax and trust your baby.
The First Days
Meconium phase lasts 2-3 days. Transition phase follows, showing progression from dark to green-brown to yellow.
Mature Breastfed Poop
By day 5, normal breastfed poop is yellow, seedy, and has sweet smell. Consistency is soft and paste-like.
How Much Is Normal?
3-5+ stools daily in first weeks. As baby ages and milk supply stabilizes, output may decrease to 1-2 daily—still normal.
The Great Slowdown: Normal or Constipation?
Around 6 weeks, many breastfed babies poop less frequently. Going 7-10 days without a stool is normal if baby seems comfortable.
Why the Pattern Changes
Breast milk is almost completely digestible. Less waste means less stool. Baby's digestive system is increasingly efficient.
When Less Output Is a Concern
If baby has fewer than 6 wet diapers daily and seems uncomfortable, contact pediatrician. Most decreased stooling is normal development.
Explosive vs. Regular Stools
Explosive poop during feeds is normal. Stools can shoot across the diaper or up baby's back. This doesn't indicate problems.
